The word ‘Pathogen’ derived from the Greek word ‘páthos’ and means ‘experience’, ‘suffering’, ‘sensation’, ‘passion’ or ’emotion’. Pathos expresses feelings and emotions or the quality in an actual life experience or in literature, music, speech, or other forms of expression, evoking a feeling of pity, sympathy, sorrow or compassion.

In the medical world, a pathogen is considered an infectious biological agent that can disrupt the functionalities of a healthy living cell and may cause disease. In most instances healthy cells are damaged or killed by the invading pathogens. There are many different pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites and other micro-organisms. Other disease causing things are sometimes referred to as pathogens such as heavy metals, chemicals and other toxins.
